About:
Pinot is a metasearch tool built around the GTKmm toolkit, the Xapian
information retrieval library, and the language guessing functionality of
libtextcat. It enables one to query search engines, and display as well as
analyze and locally index the returned results. It can also be used as a
lightweight desktop search tool (local documents and mbox mail accounts
can be imported and indexed). The type of documents is currently limited
to plain text, HTML, PDF, and MS Word.

Changes:
This release added support for OpenSearch Description plugins in addition
to better handling of Sherlock plugins. The build system now uses
autotools, and a new command-line tool called pinot_search allows queries
to be run from the shell. The UI's extract field is now resizable. Term
prefixes were changed to conform to conventions used by other Xapian-based
tools. Queries on an index that cannot be locked no longer loop. A number
of UTF-8 fixes were made. Errors in worker threads and at startup are
caught and handled more gracefully.

Changes:
Document labels no longer have colours. Selecting a label on an index lists
those documents that have the label. The dependency on OTS was dropped;
abstracts are now generated at search time based on query terms. The curl
library is now used by default for HTTP access, instead of Neon. Several
bugs were corrected. Following the introduction of autotools in 0.43, the
PDF, RTF, and MS Word tokenizer libraries were not built correctly. A
potential deadlock was fixed in the UI. It would sometime occur when
listing the index and saving the preferences in quick succession.

display and analyze the results. It makes full use of advanced indexing
and search facilities offered by Xapian, features language detection,
dynamic document summaries, easy labelling of documents, and internal
support for common file types. The D-Bus interface allows easy integration
with other applications.

Changes:
A memory leak in the tokenizers that primarily affected the daemon was
fixed. In the UI, highlighting of abstracts and clipboard copy of results
was fixed. The download and parsing of non-Latin results from some Web
engines was fixed. xdg Autostart is now used to start the daemon
automatically. The metasearch UI was improved.

Changes:
The Xapian-related code was moved into a separate back-end. Several issues
were fixed with query stemming, which is now independent of the language
filter. Viewed documents are added to the desktop environment's list of
recently used files. When the index needs updating, the user is now told
on every run until they click the "Don't warn me again" check box. The
Status window shows which engines are available. The Sherlock plugin
parser was fixed. Support for Xesam languages was updated to RC1. The
D-Bus interface was expanded. The Dutch, Spanish, and Swedish translations
were updated.

Changes:
The suggestion of query terms and which colour to use when listing new
results are now configurable preferences. For search engines that use
redirectors (such as Yahoo!), actual results URLs are extracted from the
given links. Abstract generation has been tweaked. Some search engines
were removed and others added. The build system was changed to work on
Fedora Core 5. The cause of the crash when searching several engines
simultaneously was identified and fixed.

Changes:
Various problems were fixed on SMP systems, client DBus code, parsing of
applications .desktop files, and a possible document loss when indexing
very long capitalized terms. Assumptions about a UTF-8 locale were
corrected. The daemon process runs with a low priority by default, uses
less memory for events and documents loading, and exits cleanly when
signaled while crawling. DBus messages are now handled by separate
threads. The UI was translated to Dutch and Swedish. First-time
configuration is now easier and a filter on file extension was added.

Initial support for CJKV indexing and searching was implemented. Stemmed
terms are taken into consideration when building extracts. The Google
plugin was updated. The display of results extracts and crawler errors in
the Status window was fixed. Also fixed were the premature ending of
directory crawling, build flags mismatch, and compilation with GCC 4.3.
The Spanish translation was updated.

Pinot can now be built against Mozilla or Firefox. There are new tokenizers
available for MP3, Vorbis, and FLAC files (with a dependency on the TagLib
library) and XML and OpenDocument/StarOffice files. Xdgmime is now used to
query the shared-mime-info database for better MIME type detection. Support
for the Google API was resurrected (the gsoap development toolkit is
required) and the extraction of results' extract and URL was tweaked. A
bug that would cause a crash when indexing search results while the My
Documents tab isn't opened was fixed.

external index configuration window was revamped. Most operations that
involve peeking at the index are done in the background. Brazilian
Portuguese and Russian translations were added.

CJKV indexing is faster. The spelling database is populated with CJKV terms
too. Stored queries can index all results or only new results. In
Preferences, patterns can be reset to default values. The Status window
shows whether the daemon was stopped by or disconnected from D-Bus. A new
plugin for UNdata is included. Possible crashes in pinot-index,
pinot-dbus-daemon, and pinot were fixed, as well as an issue with
signalling between crawler and indexer. Fixes were applied to build with
gcc 4.3, and for inotify support on some platforms. A simplified Chinese
translation was added.

analyze and locally index the returned results. Supported sources are
search plugins, the Google SOAP API and Xapian indexes. Supported document
types include plain text, HTML, PDF, RTF, MS Word, XML,
OpenDocument/StarOffice, mbox, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis. Its goals are to make
Web search engines easily available to end users and to harness Xapian to
index the user's personal documents. Pinot is moving towards what Beagle
and Kat do, while still retaining a focus on metasearch.

Changes:
The Google API engine is no longer unnecessarily picky about queries'
parameters. The state of engine channels is saved and restored. Query
terms are highlighted in the extract field. Editing the language of
documents is allowed; a subsequent update will use the given language to
stem terms. All programs have man pages and support --help and --version.
Some other minor changes were made.

This release fixed an off-by-one error in the numbering of mail message
parts, initialization of the HTML filter, and some issues with the inotify
monitor. Indexes are versioned. The daemon will automatically upgrade an
index created with an older version. Directories are indexed as separate
documents. Query filters with spaces or control characters can be

Pinot is a metasearch tool built around the Xapian Information Retrieval
library, the language guessing functionality of libtextcat and the GTKmm
toolkit. It enables one to query search engines and display as well as
analyze and locally index the returned results. Supported sources are
search plugins, the Google SOAP API and Xapian indexes. Supported document
types include plain text, HTML, PDF, RTF, MS Word, XML,
OpenDocument/StarOffice, mbox, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis. Its goals are to make
Web search engines easily available to end users and to harness Xapian to
index the user's personal documents. Pinot is moving towards what Beagle
and Kat do, while still retaining a focus on metasearch.

Changes:
File monitoring is now done with inotify instead of FAM/Gamin. This lays
the groundwork for the next release. UI-wise, several menu items
inconsistencies were fixed. All query terms are highlighted in the
extract. Threads (eg indexing results) that finish while the import dialog
is up are processed when the dialog box is closed. A bug preventing the
user-provided language from being used on a document update has been
fixed.

Support for drag-n-drop to the stored queries list was implemented.
Dropping a file will create a query to look for similar documents. Search
plugins may define editable parameters. Preferences and pinot-search allow
assigning values to those parameters. A basic Xesam back-end based on
xesam-glib is available. Abstracts can be selected, copied, and dropped
onto the queries list to create new queries. Abstract generation is less
skewed towards common terms. Very short non-CJKV terms are skipped when
expanding queries. The mangling of some CJKV queries was fixed.

This" feature extracts representative terms from the selected documents.

for documents with language "Unknown". History items older than one month
are removed at startup. pdftotext is now used, which seems to support more
files than pdftohtml. A bug that causes a segfault when creating a query
that indexes and labels results based on a language filter was worked
around.

backend as well as to the UI to accomodate the new daemon.

files no longer need to be configured separately. The Dutch and Portuguese
translations were updated.

Changes:
Support was added for complex queries like "type:text/html and lang:en and
(tcp near ip)" at all levels. The stored queries editor allows adding any
number of filters. All attachements in mbox files are now indexed.
Documents deleted since the last crawl were not removed from the index in
some cases. Abstract generation was fixed. Lists are hidden by default to
make the UI less scary. A plugin for Google code search service was added.

to query the index built by the service or your favorite Web engine, and
display and analyze the results. It makes full use of advanced indexing
and search facilities offered by Xapian, features language detection,
dynamic document summaries, easy labelling of documents, and internal
support for common file types. The D-Bus interface allows easy integration
with other applications.

Changes:
Searching in results and suggestion of spelling corrections were
implemented. Queries support time and size ranges, and can be sorted by
date. A document's terms can be saved to a file. Properties are updated in
the background. All indexes can be browsed. The import dialog provides
inline URL completion. The status window now shows a description of
errors. Support for user-specific MIME settings was improved. They are
reloaded upon modification. A new tool called pinot-label allows you to
get or set labels on indexed files. The daemon's D-Bus interface was
expanded to manage labels.

Changes:
A major bug where the daemon would loop endlessly when reindexing MP3 and
Ogg files was fixed. Label and directory filters were sometimes not
applied correctly. Preferences now allow the user to set glob patterns for
files that should be excluded from crawling and indexing. Support for the
upcoming libtextcat 3.0 was implemented. A few other fixes were made to
the daemon, UI, and search plugins.

Changes:
The daemon stops crawling and indexing if the disk is getting full.
Crawling is also stopped when the system goes on battery, and restarted
when on AC. Support for the freedesktop.org's Power Management spec is
required. A plugin compatible with Deskbar 2.20 is included. The spelling
table is optional. Indexing files whose names contain a question mark was
fixed. pinot-label was fixed when the supplied file name isn't in the
index. Fixed build against libsigc++ 2.1. The Portuguese translation was
updated. The Swedish translation was updated.
